Who You Will Work With – The Team:

The Outreach Program’s success requires a dynamic, nimble team of driven, creative, critical thinkers. The team will use its expertise in stakeholder engagement, information design, and strategic communications to (1) draw deep insights that inform planning and decision making and (2) lead exceptional written, verbal, and visual storytelling and (3) manage strategic engagement opportunities to cultivate relationships with partners. As Outreach Coordinator, you will create impactful narratives and data-driven stories and design thoughtful engagement strategies. You will report to the Outreach Manager and collaborate to implement MCWD’s Outreach Strategy.

 

What You Will Be Doing – The Job:

Lead Effective Engagement and Facilitation

  • Manage relationships with public agencies, policymakers, non-profits, and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop strategic engagement plans and strategies for key project and policy initiatives.
  • Organize and represent MCWD at meetings and events.
  • Support the operation of the District’s Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC).
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and support public access to meaningful information.

Create Powerful Content Data-Driven Stories

  • Create original written and visual content for all communications channels.
  • Work across programs to develop data-driven stories to make complex data engaging and accessible.
  • Manage the development of various MCWD publications from strategy to publishing.
  • Maintain the District’s brand identity and voice.
  • Manage the MCWD’s website to improve user experience, maintain content, and promote accessibility.
  • Develop effective and efficient communications workflows, management systems, and tools.

Manage Strategic Media Relations

  • Monitor and analyze media and social media relevant to the District’s geography and key initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists and outlets for proactive, effective storytelling.
  • Implement media strategies for campaigns, including drafting releases and coordinating interviews.
  • Lead development and implementation of MCWD’s social media strategy.

Contribute to Outreach Program’s Planning, Strategy, and Implementation   

  • Support high-priority internal communications and engagement efforts to maximize impact.
  • Assist in managing, evaluating, and updating the District’s Outreach strategy and workflows.
  • Implement and evaluate strategies for accessible and inclusive engagement and communication.
  • Manage several outreach projects and campaigns simultaneously.
  • administrative aspects of the Outreach Program.

 

What You Will Bring to MCWD:

  • A passion for advancing MCWD’s Balanced Urban Ecology vision of watershed management.
  • Demonstrated experience catalyzing organizational partnerships with the power of storytelling and meaningful stakeholder engagement.
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in sociology, political science, environmental studies, marketing, strategic communications, graphic design, journalism, planning, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in public relations, communications, community engagement, environmental justice, or related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Advanced knowledge of the techniques used to build interpersonal relationships and partnerships, as well as strategic communications best practices. 
  • Intermediate knowledge of best practices and principles for meeting facilitation, consensus-building, conflict resolution, and community engagement, including equitable and inclusive approaches.
  • Intermediate knowledge of state and local government operations, roles, regulatory environment, and jurisdictions related to land use and water resource planning.
  • Strong familiarity with design/publishing programs, website management, content management systems, editorial process, photo/video, social media.
  • Strong and engaging verbal, visual, and written communication skills, including ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments (ability to speak a second language a plus).
  • An ability to manage multiple projects with different deadlines and prioritize workload.
  • The capacity to track, digest, and manage detail while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • A drive to stretch, learn, grow, and lead in a high-performing environment.
  • Flexible thinking, adaptability, and a desire to continuously improve products, processes, and services.
  • A propensity for interpersonal communications and relationship building.
