The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) is currently seeking to fill a Transit Planner position. The DTA is an award-winning transit agency that provides safe, convenient, and affordable public transit service (fixed route and paratransit) within the Twin Ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI and its surrounding areas. We transport just under 3 million passengers annually by way of our 75+ bus fleet and we employ approximately 180 team members. The Transit Planner designs and improves public transportation systems to ensure they are efficient, accessible, and meet the needs of a community. Their work involves a mix of data analysis, public engagement, policy planning, and governmental coordination. Hybrid/remote work options available.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze, develop, and implement short and long-range transit plans, area studies, performance metrics, and other transit planning.
  • Perform analysis of DTA bus service, routes, and stops.
  • Develop reports and recommendations.
  • Forecast future needs and trends.
  • Research and understand trends in transit planning.
  • Perform field work, public outreach, and surveying as needed to gather information to support transit planning activities.
  • Identify bus stop improvement needs.
  • Create maps as needed.
  • Prepare and/or assist in preparing required plans and documents.
  • Maintain and fulfill ongoing and emergent reporting requirements and data requests.
  • Make presentations to the DTA Board of Directors and standing committees.
  • Work with other agency staff to accomplish initiatives and provide insight.
  • Assist the General Manager in matters dealing with local, state and federal governmental agencies and bodies.
  • Serve as a DTA representative on boards, committees and commissions as may be required.
  • Provide timely responses to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Attend community events outside of regular hours to represent the DTA as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, regional planning, transportation planning, or related study.
  • Experience in mass transit or transportation planning preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Experience with basic Microsoft Office programs.
  • Map making in ARC-GIS or other is preferred but not required.
  • Understands census demographic data.
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to work well in team settings.
