The City of Shoreview is recruiting to fill a single vacant full-time Planner position in our Community Development Department.  The Planner position is central to anticipating neighborhood needs, assisting with planning efforts, and enhancing Shoreview’s livability for our residents.  This position will be filled at either the Associate Planner or Senior Planner classification depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected applicant. 

 

Associate Planner Duties:

  • Functions in a professional support capacity within the planning division and performs tasks associated with the city’s current and long-range planning efforts and other special projects as assigned. 
  • Provide information on land use applications, ordinances, codes, plans and related planning programs, services or regulations to architects, engineers, developers, contractors, business owners, residents, other agencies and staff
  • Process zoning and building permit applications from residents and developers; provide follow-up to assure compliance with development agreements and permits
  • Assist with the review of development and related land use permit applications, site plans, variance applications, etc.; examine for compliance with applicable City, state and federal regulations
  • Perform day-to-day communication activities including gathering information and preparing reports; maintaining up-to-date codes, policies and community information; providing customer service
  • Assist in providing staff support to the planning commission
  • Prepare and present staff reports to city council, planning commission, and other boards and committees
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

 

Associate Planner Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in land use planning, urban planning or closely related field
  • Two years of municipal planning experience (related Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience)
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle report

 

Senior Planner Duties:

  • Functions in a co-lead capacity with the other senior planner to plan and implement the functions of the planning division, including comprehensive planning and zoning administration. 
  • Review development proposals and related land use permit applications, site plans, variance applications, etc.; examine for compliance with applicable City, state and federal regulations
  • Assist with planning studies and complex land use and zoning application reviews, facilitate and coordinate planning and zoning community outreach and perform advanced level professional planning work involving both current and long-range planning.
  • Process permit applications from residents and developers; provide follow-up to assure compliance with regulations, development agreements, etc.

  • Professional planning work involving both current and long-range planning

  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

 

 Senior Planner Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in land use planning, urban planning or closely related field
  • Four years municipal planning experience
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory motor vehicle report

 

Associate and Senior Planner Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional municipal planning experience
  • Planning project experience
  • AICP certification (American Institute of Certified Planners)
  • Economic development and housing program experience

Note: This position requires regular and reliable attendance, the ability to concentrate and manage multiple priorities with frequent interruptions, strong written and verbal communication skills, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work well with others. 

 

Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, plus evening meetings as required

 

Associate Planner Hiring Salary Range: $64,272 - $67,538 annually, depending on experience. Excellent benefits/pension.  (2022 full salary range: $64,272 - $78,146)

 

Senior Planner Hiring Salary Range: $72,509 - $76,170 annually, depending on experience. Excellent benefits/pension.  (2022 full salary range: $72,509 - $88,150)

 

*These positions are not eligible for overtime pay.
